The debut 7-inch by D.C. indie pop band America Hearts starts with a two-minute earworm called “Be My Jones.” It’s bouncy, jaunty and I have no idea what it’s about. Either that or I know exactly what it’s about. Flip the record over and you’ll hear a song called “Race Car Driver,” that’s appropriately more zippy, slightly less bouncy. I know what that one’s about, because I asked. Jess Matthews -- who writes, sings, plays guitar and collects various bandmates -- told me it was inspired by her young cousin seeing Jess’s Red Mitsubishi 2003 Lancer-- specifically the badass spoiler -- and thinking it was a race car.
That sense of childlike wonder combined with straightforward pop songwriting sensibilities are the hallmarks of the four tracks that comprise the “Be My Jones” 7-inch, which was recorded with members of D.C. stalwarts such as Edie Sedgwick, Medications, Antelope and Washington Social Club. These are honest, catchy songs. You know the kind - refreshingly new yet instantly familiar, descended from the likes of Jonathan Richman and Beat Happening, confident in their own silliness, wistfulness or whatever.
Matthews has a distinct voice, both literally and figuratively. A warm almost-drawl, with lots of careful enunciating; and a wide-eyed, but never-precious ability to quickly get to the heart of the matter with her lyrics. If you could be friends with a song, you would definitely want to be friends with these songs. And best of all -- unlike so many of those other jerky songs -- these songs would totally be friends with you.
