about

Remember the singles club? Back when you loved a record label so much that you paid for a year's worth of seven-inches in advance?
America Hearts does.

In lieu of unwieldy, expensive vinyl that parents who don't have record players can't listen to, the Beach Boys/Magnetic Fields-inspired DC quartet fronted by Jess Matthews are releasing three digital mini-EPs at Black Cat shows in April, May, and June. The Singles Club is a compilation of the band's fresh take on lo-fi, country-tinged pop – and honoring an indie-rock tradition without worrying whether something is supposed to be played at 33 or 45 r.p.m.

So, What's in America Hearts's Singles Club? Short songs in short collections with one word names. Matthews has a distinct voice, both literally and figuratively. A warm almost-drawl, with lots of careful enunciating; and a wide-eyed, but never-precious ability to quickly get to the heart of the matter with her lyrics. The voice and words keep a consistency throughout the series even as the sound shifts from twangy "Train Tracks" to punky "You Don't Fit In."

When the band plays live -- featuring current and former members of D.C. acts such as Edie Sedgwick, Antelope, Impossible Hair, Medications, Andalusians -- it becomes a happy blur of pop efficiency. And then you can take the songs home with you in your back pocket.

“This D.C. band plays the kind of heartbreaking indie folk pop that will inevitably be co-opted by a Zooey Deschanel sitcom. ” - Brandon Weatherbee, Huffington Post

“The upcoming single, A Whole Lotta Love is, " a sweet ditty of staggering childlike sincerity that could have come from the mind heart of Moe Tucker.” - My Old Kentucky Blog

"America Hearts recalls the magnetic charm of Beat Happening and Silver Jews thanks to singer Jess Matthews straightforward cadence and jangly pop-centric instrumentals. " - Stephanie Glass, Impose Magazine

"America Hearts impresses with their ability to deliver deft observations in such an easygoing and catchy tune. (You’ll be whistling it to yourself, guaranteed.)" - DC Music Download
